Unlocking the "Why" and "How" of Music

Musicology Skills

Musicology involves a deep, inquisitive understanding of the "why," "what," "where," "when," "who," and "how" of music, examining its intricate relationship with various topics, geographical origins, historical periods, and societal contexts. As Frank D’Andrea cogently argues in "Music Education Needs Musicology," knowing the history and structure of music is not merely supplementary but absolutely essential to a musician's comprehensive education.

An imaginative and well-organized music teacher utilising the Triquetrae Music Programme can effectively integrate music history, structure, and diverse styles alongside core performance technique, in-depth analysis, enriching educational concerts, and systematic progress reporting. This approach, incorporating the humanities—specifically musicology—creates a balanced and exceptionally well-rounded curriculum that prepares students for a multifaceted engagement with music.

Within the Triquetrae Programme, musicology skills are primarily developed and nurtured within the Grow Zone and Explore Zone. Cultivating an understanding of the "who," "what," "why," "where," "when," and "how" provides the crucial answers to questions that invariably arise when learning any new skill.

By consciously applying these investigative questions to any piece or skill within the Achieve Zone, students gain profound insights that directly contribute to achieving the desired sound and a truly informed musical performance. This foundational musicological inquiry ensures that students are not just playing notes, but truly understanding the world of the music they create and perform.
