The Dorian Mode is the perfect “wake‑up‑and‑move” mode. It starts on D and uses all the white keys, giving the music a bright but slightly salty, adventurous sound.
Drunken Sailor needs speed, energy, and a sense of urgency.
Dorian has a lively lift in the middle of the scale, which makes the tune feel like sailors running down the deck.
Listen for:
The raised 6th (B natural), this is the Dorian magic note.
A rhythm that feels like stamping feet.
A melody that sounds brave, bold, and slightly mischievous.

As you play this mode, think of pulling a rope, where you cross your finger over is like moving your hand up the rope.
Use this mode to raise the sails on the 'Modal Memoria'.
The Dorian mode uses a strong drone in the bass to drive the beat forwards. Listen for the change in the left hand when the melody moved from using the notes D, F and A to the notes C, E, and G. This is how the Dorian Anchor secures your music.

Your Dorian Anchor Challenge
Play D–E–F–G–A–B–C–D with a rhythm to pull the rope on the heavy sails.
Can you feel the “Heave-ho” energy?
How heavy do you think the Dorian Anchor is?
